A Shaft Enclosure is not required per 2012 IBC Section 712.1.3.1 when the vertical opening between stories does not exceed twice the horizontal projected area of the escalator and the escalator does not connect more than 4. stories (other than Group B and M). In addition, in a building equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system where the opening is protected by a draft curtain and closely spaced sprinklers.
