Stair Framing

Dave and Buster’s
– Raise Roof

1.  PERMIT STATUS

3-24-2017 – Permit reviewed. Comments issued.

2.  Advisory Comment (no response required):  This review is based on the requirements of
the 2012 Anchorage Administrative Code (AMC 23.10), 2012 International Building
Code (IBC), and all adopted references thereto as amended by MOA.  The following comments must be addressed
before a permit can be issued. The approval of plans and specifications does
not permit the violation of the codes, or any federal, state, or local
regulations.

Please submit a
written explanation for how each comment has been addressed.

3.  FRAMING BENEATH THE MID-HEIGHT FLOOR LANDING
PLATE –

SHEET E101

This drawing shows some kind of framing beneath the
landing plate, parallel to the stringers.
It does not show the framing detailed on Sheet M7, which is
perpendicular to the stringers.  Please
clarify.

4.  BENT PLATES THAT STIFFEN THE FLOOR LANDING
PLATE –

SHEET M7 – TRIBUTARY
WIDTH

The detail on Sheet M7 shows the plate with a 12 inch
cantilever from a 1.5x1.5 bent plate.  The
calculations seem to assume attachment to something.  If the plate is attached to some adjacent
framing, please show where this attachment is found in the details.  Otherwise revise the calculations on page 1.

5.  BENT PLATES THAT STIFFEN THE FLOOR LANDING
PLATE –

SHEET M7 - CAPACITY

See page 1.  The
calculation of I and Z are not correct.
The working stress neutral axis was calculated as 1.33 inches from the
bottom the 1.5 x 1.5 bent plate.  This
cannot be correct.  This is well below
the mass of the steel which consists of the plate and the horizontal leg of the
bent plate.  The actual working-stress
axis is just below the floor plate, barely in the horizontal leg of the bent
plate.

In the y-bar calculation, the y-distance of the first two
components was measured from the bottom, while the y-distance of the 3
rd
component was incorrectly measured from the top.

Deflection – It is not clear where the 110 plf comes
from.  However, using this load the
deflection calculation for the bent plate does not work.  The calculations show that I = 0.191 is
required, but the actual I equals about 0.148.

The plastic section modulus Z is also not correct.  The calculations show Z = 0.36.  I could not see how this was determined.  The actual Z is about 0.22.  Other calculations show that only 0.193 was
required, so this seems to be okay.

6.  ATTACHEMENT OF BENT PLATE ANGLES TO STAIR
STRINGERS

Sheet M7 shows 1.5x1.5 and 3x8 bent plates.  Please show on the drawings where these are
attached to the stair stringers.

7.  COLUMN BASE PLATES

Please clarify base plate details on Sheet D7.  It looks like there is a combination of
square and rectangular baseplates.

Please show the relationship of the square baseplates to
the rectangular base plate.  Why is there
only one rectangular base plate?

Is the orientation of the rectangular baseplate really
perpendicular to the braces?

8.  TUBE-TO-TUBE WELDS –

SHEET D7

Please show the size of tube-to-tube welds.

9.  DETAILS A AND C –

SHEET E101

The drawings show these as new details.  If the connection details have been changed
from the already-approved details in the main submittal for C16-1993, please
completely detail them and provide calculations for all limit states.

10.  ENGINEER’S STAMP REQUIRED

Please stamp all drawings with design information.
