Advisory Comment (no response required): This review is based on the requirements of the2012 Anchorage Administrative Code (AMC 23.10), 2012 International BuildingCode (IBC), and all adopted references thereto as amended by MOA. The followingcomments must be addressed before a permit can be issued. The approval of plansand specifications does not permit the violation of the codes, or any federal,state or local regulations.
Please submit awritten explanation for how each comment has been addressed.
3. AUGMENTED COMPOSITE BEAMS W/ WT 5x – NUMBER OFSTUDS
Detail 6/S5.03 shows the studs in existing concrete. The calculations depend on the number ofexisting studs. Please provide the basisfor using the number of shear studs shown in the calculations. There was no information on the drawings thatwere submitted. The number of studs perfoot varied widely on the different beams. W16x26 – 18 studs – 32 foot span. W12x14 – 21 studs – 21 foot span. W14x22 – 22 studs – 27 foot span.
4. AUGMENTED COMPOSITE BEAMS W/ WT 5x – MOMENTCAPACITY
It was not clear how the moment capacities of these augmentedcomposite beams were calculated. Pleaseprovide a step-by-step hand calculation for the W16x26 beam.

Please provide a step-by-step hand calculation forthe W16x26 beam.
6. ATTACHMENT OF AUGMENTED BEAMS TO SUPPORTBEAMS

Note 3 says “Once connection of (E) W bm is visible,contact engineer of record for (E) W bm connection to W24.” This can be a deferred submittal, but thedesign and connection details need to be submitted for review before theconnection is made.

Please provide these connection designs and details.
7. EXISTING COLUMNS AND FOUNDATIONS
Provide calculations to check capacity of existingcolumns and foundations to resist the new loads.
8. STRUCTURAL NOTES
There are many notes including special inspection notes thatdo not apply to this project. Pleasedelete them. Revise notes so they arespecific to this project.
9. STATEMENT OF SPECIAL INSPECTION
Please provide special inspection requirements specificallyfor this project. See AMC 23.105.105.1.
10. LETTER INDICATING WHO IS HIRING THE SPECIALINPECTOR
Please provide a letter from the owner stating who heis hiring to do the Special Inspection.
Only the owner or the design professional acting for theowner can hire the Special Inspector. See IBC, 1704.2, paragraph 1.
11. SPECIAL INSPECTION AND TESTING AGREEMENT
Please fill out and submit a signed copy of the SpecialInspection and Testing Agreement. Attacha copy of the special inspection requirement specific to this project beforethe agreement is signed. The purpose ofthis agreement is so that all who are involved in the project know the extentof the special inspection.
