1. Please provide substantiating data showing the existing CMU walls meet Intermediate Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls. Reference ACI 530-11 sections 1.18.3.2.5, 1.18.3.2.11 and 1.18.4.4. Intermediate Reinforced Shear Walls are not permitted by current code so typically design per ASCE 41 would be provided. If Ordinary Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls are used, the R factor for this system leads to conservative results as compared to ASCE 41. It is not clear that using IRMSW is conservative.
