Thanks for submitting your code opinion question to ICC. Your question referenced Section 806.1.2 of the 2009 IBC, and is paraphrased as follows:
Q: How is the percentage of area calculated for allowed decorative materials attached to a drop ceiling?
A: Section 806.1.2 notes that decorative materials meeting the flame propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701 cannot exceed 10 percent of the specific ceiling area to which it is attached. This simply means that the decorative materials, regardless of length from ceiling to floor, may not encompass an area over 10 percent of the ceiling area. As a result, the equation you have noted, [(Wdm x Ldm) / Ceiling Area] x 100 (where dm – dimensions of the decorative area) would provide the allowed area for decorative materials attached to the ceiling.
