PERMIT STATUS (no response required) 9/17/2013: Review completed. Comments issued.

Advisory Comment (no response required):  This review is based on the requirements of the Anchorage Administrative Code (AAC), 2009 International Building Code (IBC), 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) and all adopted references thereto as amended by MOA. The following comments must be addressed before a permit can be issued. The approval of plans and specifications does not permit the violation of the codes, or any federal, state or local regulations.

1. WIND LOADS

Reference page 1 of the calculations. Please clarify how the wind load was determined. Parapets must be designed for 2 cases; the first with positive wall pressure on the outside face (face away from roof) and negative wind uplift pressure on the inside face (face toward roof), and the second positive wall pressure on the inside face, and negative wall pressure on the outside face. In addition, this parapet has a roof so roof components and cladding pressures must be applied as well. For wind towards the outside face, positive roof pressure (towards roof) must be applied. For wind towards the inside face overhang components and cladding loads must be applied to the roof away from the outside face of the roof. Please clarify the applied load or revise and resubmit. Please note that that the components and cladding areas will depend on the component being designed.

2. Le FOR BENDING

Reference page 5 of the calculations. Le for bending has been taken as 0 ft. This is true when the side of the framing with plywood on it is in compression, but not true when the inside face is in bending. Please clarify how Le for this condition has been indicated.

3. DESIGN OF EXISTING TUBE

Reference the calculations. Where is the design of the existing tubes? Please provide or indicate where in the calculations the design has been provided. Where the forces in the elements have been increased by less than 10% no check is required; however given there is a >33% increase in length the forces will likely be increased by more than 10%. Reference IEBC section 303.4.

4. DESIGN OF EXISTING LOAD PATH

Reference the calculations. Where is the design of the load path from the existing tubes to the structure? Please provide or indicate where in the calculations the design has been provided. Where the forces in the elements have been increased by less than 10% no check is required; however given there is a >33% increase in length the forces will likely be increased by more than 10%. Reference IEBC section 303.4.

5. CONNECTION DESIGNS

Reference the calculations. Where is the design of all new and existing connections? Please provide or indicate where in the calculations the design has been provided. Where the forces in the existing connections have been increased by less than 10% no check is required; however given there is a >33% increase in length the forces will likely be increased by more than 10%. Reference IEBC section 303.4.

6. HINGE

Reference sketch SSK-2. There is a hinge in the parapet at the interface of the existing and new. Please clarify how force are transferred across this hinge. Reference IBC section 1604.4.

7. KICKER BRACE

Reference the calculations. Please clarify where the design of the kicker brace has been provided. Reference AAC section 23.10.104.8. Please clarify why there is not kicker brace at the end of the parapet closest to grid 4 (across from the brace closest to grid 5. Reference AAC section 23.10.104.8.

Please provide a written response to the comments and include one copy of additional or revise calculations, and two copies of additional or revise drawings. While not required it is extremely helpful to the reviewer if the response indicates where in the submittal each comments has been addressed.

All submittals should be sent to the permit manager.
