REVIEW STATUS
08/19/2013 – Initial review (317862). Comments issued.
GENERAL
This review is code compliance review based on the requirements of the International Existing Building Code (IEBC), 2009 Edition, and all adopted references thereto, as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage in Anchorage Municipal Code (AMC) Title 23. This review does not permit the violation of the building codes, nor any federal, state, or municipal regulation.
The following comments must be addressed before a permit may be issued. Additional comments may be issued following review of submitted information.
1. SPECIAL INSPECTION PERSONNEL
Please provide a letter from the Owner/Owner's Representative, or Special Inspection Agency stating that the Special Inspection Agency has been retained by the Owner to provide special inspection services for the project as required by IBC Chapter 17.
Reference: AMC 23.15.1704.1.4
2. DECK WELD SIZE
Refer to Sheet S0.1. Please clarify the deck weld size for visual inspection. Based on the calculations, it appears that the intent was to note 3/4 in. diameter visual weld size instead of effective; the capacities shown in the calculations appear to be based on deck catalog values, which are based on 1/2 in. diameter effective welds.
Reference: AWS D1.3 Section 2.2.6
3. METAL STUD INFORMATION
Refer to Sheet S0.1. Please complete the metal stud framing information.
Reference: IBC Section 1603.1; AMC 23.10.104.8.1
4. DRAG STRUT CONNECTION
Refer to Detail 3/S5.3. Please address the following:
a. The detail is noted as a drag strut connection, but does not indicate the requirement for the bolts to be installed slip-critically. Please clarify.
b. The detail does not appear to show the shear tabs as continuous through the HSS column. The calculations appear to show the plate as continuous through the column. Please clarify design. If the shear tabs are not continuous, please provide design analysis of the HSS column wall for required demands.
Reference: AISC 360 Section K1; AISC 341 Section 7.2
5. BASE PLATE AT BRACED FRAME
Refer to Details 11/ and 12/S5.3. Please clarify how the compression effects on the base plate from the brace gusset are being resisted where the base plate does not have adequate bearing away from the pilaster; the concern is whether or not the base plate will be subject to flexural stresses as the gusset compresses into the base.
Reference: IBC Section 1604.4
6. JOIST LOADING
Please clarify the joist loading for the project. It appears that joists will be subject to special loading conditions (e.g. snow drift, chord axial loads from out-of-plane masonry anchorages, etc.) that are not defined on the plans.
