Advisory Comment (no response required): This review is based on the requirements of the Anchorage Administrative Code (AAC), 2006 International Building Code (IBC) and all adopted references thereto as amended by MOA. The following comments must be addressed before a permit can be issued. The approval of plans and specifications does not permit the violation of the codes, or any federal, state or local regulations. STAMPED AND SIGNED DETAILS Please provide details that are stamped and signed by an Engineer licensed in the state of Alaska. Reference the Alaska State Statutes section 08.48.221. Comment resolved. Response accepted. WAB - 7/22/2009 DESIGN CLARIFICATIONS Reference pages 9 and 10 of the calculations. It appears that several of the anchors do not meet the non ductile yielding provision. Please clarify why these anchors have not been redesigned. Comment resolved. It appears that the 2.5 safety factor has been included. WAB - 7/22/2009 DESIGN OF ANCHOR GROUPS Reference pages 8 through 10 of the calculations. Anchorage to concrete must be designed to ACI 318-05 Appendix D. Please note that anchors in a group must be design differently than individual anchors. Please verify that the anchors used do not act as a group or determine the strength per ACI 318-05. Please note that allowable stress design is not permitted for designing anchorage to concrete when seismic loads are considered. Reference IBC section 1911.1. Comment remains. Per the original submittal it appears the anchors are spaced at 5" O.C. With 3.25" embedment the anchors would have to be spaced at 10" O.C. to act as individual anchors. Otherwise the capacity for concrete breakout in tension must be determined as an anchor bolt group. Please verify that the anchors are sufficient considering them acting as a group. Reference ACI 318-05 Appendix D. Please provide written responses to the comments above and include one copy of additional or revise calculations and two copies of addition or revise drawings. While not required it is extremely helpful to the reviewer if the response indicates where in the submittal each comment has been resolved. Providing this information can greatly reduce the review time on the resubmittal.
